Michigan Wolverines news: Donovan Edwards ‘will revolutionize the game’; latest on 5-star Bryce Underwood, and more
Michigan football running back Donovan Edwards says he will ‘revolutionize the game’ plus the Michigan Wolverines impressed Bryce Underwood and more.
One thing you have to love about Michigan football running back Donovan Edwards is the fact that the man doesn’t lack confidence.
Based on what he did last season for the Michigan Wolverines, especially the two long touchdown runs against the Ohio State Buckeyes — Edwards shouldn’t lack confidence.
The former five-star recruit should be a first-round draft pick in my mind at some point and Edwards seems to agree. In an interview with Max Chadwick of Pro Football Focus, Edwards said this about his receiving ability:
"“I’m the best dual-threat running back. I’ll catch a ball 50 yards down the field over the shoulder. I’ll be the best slot receiver in the country if I was really mastering that craft, which I am this year. You can’t put a linebacker or safety on me. Shoot, you might have to double-team me or put your best corner on me.”"
Edwards dealt with some injuries last season and one that caused him to have to wear a cast on his hand. That impacted the way he carried the ball, but also his ability as a receiver and he’s correct that he’s elite in that area.
It will be fun to see how Michigan fooball utilizes Edwards this season. I believe he’ll rush for 1,000 yards, along with Blake Corum. The Michigan Wolverines standout takes it a step further though when talking about his NFL future, saying he’ll change the game:
"“I will go down as one of the greatest running backs to ever play the game,” Edwards said when asked what people should expect from him. “I’ll be up there with Walter Payton and Barry Sanders. I believe I will revolutionize the game and the position at running back for how I run my routes, for how I play as a running back, and how I can play at receiver, too.”"
Bryce Underwood talks visit to Michigan football
Just before the recruiting dead period, five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood visited the Michigan Wolverines twice, on consecutive days.
One of those visits was for the recruiting BBQ. Underwood also visited LSU that weekend. The Tigers appear to be the top contender to Michigan fotoball in the recruitment of the top-ranked quarterback in the 2025 class out of Belleville, Michigan.
Underwood spoke about the visit to The Wolverine and said, in part, “Michigan wanted me there so bad so I had to show them love…It was a good visit.”
The Michigan Wolverines are the leader right now for Underwood via the On3 prediction machine. He’s set to announce a commitment in January.
Michigan football QB J.J. McCarthy makes another watch list
J.J. McCarthy is going to have an incredible season. That’s one prediction I’m certain is going to come true this season and on Monday, he was named to another preseason award watch list.
This time, it’s the Davey O’Brien Award, which goes out to the best quarterback in college football. While many pundits have McCarthy ranked in the top 10 (near 10th) among quarterbacks, he’s going to be viewed much more favorably by the season’s end.
Maybe he will even win the O’Brien Award, although winning a national championship is what really matters to him and the rest of the Michigan football team.
