Michigan Wolverines news: U-M rookies turning heads, fall camp highlights, and more
Former Michigan football players are impressing in NFL camps as rookies, highlights from fall camp, and more Michigan Wolverines news.
Former Michigan Wolverines standout Mazi Smith was a first-round draft pick for a reason and so far, the defensive tackle who dominated at Michigan football is doing the same in Dallas.
The Cowboys were looking to upgrade their run defense and Smith is certainly going to do that. He’s not known as much as a pass rusher, but the former Michigan fooball standout can push the pocket and he’s turning heads in fall camp.
Smith has even drawn some comparisons to Ndamukong Suh. He’s shown in the video above throwing around a Cowboys offensive lineman like a rag doll, which is something Michigan football fans have seen once or twice over the years.
What’s more, is that another former Michigan Wolverines standout is turning heads. DJ Turner, who was selected in the second round of the draft by the Bengals, is having a strong camp and notched an interception on Sunday.
Highlights and rumblings from Michigan football fall camp
Michigan football keeps working during fall camp and here are some highlights from Sunday’s practice.
The Michigan Wolverines don’t allow media to attend practice and Jim Harbaugh doesn’t meet with the media much, so these videos are some of the best glimpses we get into practice.
Of course, Michigan football is careful not to give up much. But you do catch No. 73 LaDarius Henderson playing left tackle for the Wolverines, although according to Chris Balas, the battle rages on with Trente Jones, Karsen Barnhart, and Myles Hinton in the mix at tackle too.
That was one of the position battles we wanted to keep an eye on this fall. We also project Henderson to be the starter, but Jones or Barnhart could also start at left tackle.
Barnhart is going to start one way or another. He’s a top-two tackle on this Michigan football team, which is saying something and it will be fun to see how it plays out.
But as Jim Harbaugh said, the Michigan Wolverines have 10 offensive line starters for five positions. On another fall note, Balas reports that Amorion Walker is having a solid camp too, so don’t assume Josh Wallace is going to win the job opposite Will Johnson.
Former Michigan football recruit Dante Moore clears the air
There have been rumblings that Dante Moore, the former five-star quarterback from the state of Michigan is unhappy with UCLA.
The Bruins also added a quarterback in the transfer portal this offseason and Moore is part of a very real competition to be the starter. Yet, it might not be in the cards, which isn’t shocking.
It took J.J. McCarthy until his sophomore season before he took over full-time as the starter. However, there were also rumors about Moore being unhappy with his NIL deal and looking to transfer.
Of course, Michigan football fans will never forget Moore and if there’s talk of him transferring, they are going to be all over it.
Yet, Moore took to Twitter to push back on the rumors, saying he’s perfectly happy with the Bruins. The former five-star QB calls the rumors, “Totally false.”
