Michigan Football: It’s Time for a Real Maize Out
In mid-July, news broke that Michigan football will have its annual Maize Out game against East Carolina to start the season. It always makes for an incredible atmosphere and seems to help the team get even more amped up than usual. Of course, the crowd is expected to wear all maize, but why hasn’t the team joined them?
Since Rich Rodriguez was let go after the 2010 season, Michigan football has experimented with a few one-off alternate jerseys. All but one of those alternates were during the Adidas era, which is a time period that most Michigan fans would like to forget.
Shortly after Jim Harbaugh was hired at Michigan, the athletic department struck a deal with Nike to have the football team become the first non-basketball program to rock the iconic Jordan Brand logo. In 2021, Michigan football has made minor tweaks to what they wear on game days, including the addition of blue pants.
It’s time for a real Maize out
The only game in the Jim Harbaugh era in which Michigan wore a jersey other than its traditional blue or white was the 2017 season opener against the Florida Gators in Arlington at AT&T Stadium.
Michigan football wore their all-maize uniform combination for the first and only time when they beat the defending SEC East champions in convincing fashion 33-17 (fun fact: Florida was coached by current Central Michigan Head Coach Jim McElwain).
With all of that said, why hasn’t Michigan worn the all-maize uniforms in a regular season game since 2017? Obviously Michigan hasn’t lost a game in the all-maize combination and the jersey is seen being worn all over television broadcasts at the Big House.
As a college football blue blood, Michigan and the fan base love to embrace tradition. I believe it is time for a new tradition, and that everyone wears maize during a maize out, including the team itself.
