Michigan basketball has never beaten the Texas Tech Red Raiders

  • Overall series record: 0-3
  • First matchup: December 28, 1978
  • Last matchup: March 28, 2019
  • Last Score: Texas Tech 63, Michigan 44

Michigan has won plenty of games in their history, but they’ve fallen in all three matchups against Texas Tech, with one of those games coming on college basketball’s biggest stage just a few seasons ago.

The first matchup was in the Sun Carnival, a neutral-site event in El Paso back in 1978. The Wolverines fell 87-85 to the Red Raiders, giving up the most points in a game they’d allow all season, though they’d bounce back the following day by beating host UTEP.

The two schools would meet again just five years later in a similar event, now named the Sun Bowl Classic. One day after losing by one to host UTEP, Michigan lost 59-58 against the Red Raiders, with those two games spoiling a 7-0 start that had them ranked #15 in the nation at the time.

Many years later, these two would have their most significant matchup, meeting in the Sweet Sixteen of the 2019 NCAA Tournament. Jarrett Culver scored 22 points and Texas Tech’s elite defense shut down the Wolverines, claiming a 63-44 win en route to their best season in program history, getting the mini-upset over Michigan, the two-seed.
