Michigan basketball has never beaten the Arizona State Sun Devils

  • Overall series record: 0-4
  • First matchup: December 27, 1965
  • Last matchup: November 17, 2022
  • Last Score: Arizona State 87, Michigan 62

It may seem strange, but it’s the Sun Devils who have had Michigan’s number more than any other team on this list. These two programs have played four times, including during this past season, and Arizona State has claimed victory in all four matchups.

The first battle was a major disappointment for the Wolverines, who were ranked No. 7 in the nation when they lost to the Sun Devils 89-87. It was the opening round of the Far West Classic in Portland, Oregon, though Michigan would bounce back and win games the following two days.

Round two with Arizona State was just under two years later, facing off in Tempe as part of the Sun Devil Classic in 1967. It was another close and hard-fought game, but a slightly less successful Michigan team failed again, losing 92-91 to the Sun Devils.

Nearly three decades later, the two schools met in the semifinals of the 1994 Maui Classic, as the Sun Devils upset a Michigan team ranked No. 13 in the nation, getting a 79-62 win with relative ease.

This past season marked the fourth edition of this matchup, and it ended just the same. The two schools met in the Legends Classic in Brooklyn and the Sun Devils ran away with it, securing an 87-62 victory while getting 20 points from Desmond Cambridge Jr.
