Could Michigan Football push for former Georgia commitment?
Even before Jaylen Heyward decommitted from Georgia, Michigan football was making a push for him to take an official visit.
College football recruiting is wild. That’s one of the few guarantees you can take to the bank and on Tuesday, another target has become available for Michigan football following the decommitment of Jaylen Heyward from Georgia.
Heyward is a 5-foot-11, 180-pound safety out of Rockledge, Florida. He’s ranked 79th overall according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, as well as the fifth-best safety in the class.
Even before the decommitment, Heyward was talking about taking an official visit to Michigan football during the 2024 cycle and maybe that could still be in the works.
Heyward was showing signs of not being 100 percent to Georgia this spring. He took official visits to UCF and Miami. In fact, Heyward took multiple trips to Miami — an official visit as well as an unofficial visit.
The Hurricanes are probably the team to beat in terms of contenders right now, but Michigan football could certainly work its way into the mix.
How Michigan football could become a contender
Obviously, the fact that Heyward is from Florida is going to work in Miami’s favor. The Hurricanes also have more NIL to throw around and Mario Cristobal is an elite recruiter.
However, Michigan football has a lot to sell too. Steve Clinkscale was the most active recruiter for Michigan and he always does a good job of keeping the Wolverines in the mix.
Looking at the way Rod Moore and Makari Paige have developed certainly can’t hurt in terms of recruiting. Jacob Oden is already committed in the 2024 class. The in-state prospect is another blue-chipper so there’s not a huge need but one safety isn’t really enough.
The Wolverines have become a factor with top-100 safety Zaquan Patterson too, but according to EJ Holland, they have never stopped recruiting Heyward.
Miami seems to have that momentum. If the Wolverines could get him on campus for the BBQ or something that would be significant.
We’ll see what happens. It’s interesting to know that Michigan hasn’t stopped recruiting Heyward and now that he’s uncommitted again, I would expect that recruitment to ramp up.
