With the Job Opening at Northwestern, a Familiar Name has been Mentioned…

Michigan football’s Sherrone Moore has once again been brought up in head coaching conversations, but this time at Northwestern. After the awful hazing allegations broke the news, it was only a matter of time before Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald would be fired.

Northwestern had a tremendous season in 2020, in which they were ranked in the top 10 and close to upsetting Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship, however, they have completely fallen off since. In 2022, Northwestern went 1-11, and there isn’t really much to be excited about.

Steve Wiltfong was quick to tweet that Sherrone Moore should be one of the first calls Northwestern makes, and he would be a home run hire for Northwestern. It’s only a matter of time before Moore becomes a head coach, and many believe this is his last season as Michigan’s offensive coordinator. But would Moore leave for the job?

In Short, No

I don’t think there is anything to worry about here. I mean, put yourself in the shoes of Sherrone Moore. You’re the offensive coordinator of what should be a top-five offense in America with national title hopes. Not only that, but you’re also arguably the hottest name in terms of head coaching candidates. You’re not giving that up for Northwestern (respectfully).

Moore, in my opinion, is just too good of a candidate to go to a 1-11 Northwestern. Moore is a guy who would be a frontrunner for a head coaching job at a top-10 program in America if there was an opening. He understands his worth and loves his spot with Michigan football. He’s not giving that up for a mediocre head coaching job.

Moore has shown that he’s not looking to rush to the top. He’s willing to take his time and wait for the right opportunity. He could’ve had a head coaching job at a school probably better than Northwestern after last season but chose not to leave. That shows character.

He loves his players and understands he’s competing for a national championship this year. He won’t give that up. After the season, yes, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him leave for a head coaching job if a valuable position opens up. But I don’t see Moore jumping ship for a team that’s not going to be a contender anytime soon.

Ultimately, I don’t think there’s anything to worry about with Moore and Northwestern. I’m sure Northwestern will inquire, because why wouldn’t they, but it would seem very out of character for Moore to leave right before the season starts.

I expect Sherrone Moore to be around for the entire Michigan football season, and he will dedicate 110% to this team. Enjoy the season, and go blue!
