Michigan Wolverines news: A new 2024 commitment, latest recruiting trends, and more
Michigan football landed a new commitment over the weekend, plus we cover some positive and negative recruiting trends in our Michigan Wolverines news roundup.
Not everything went the way of the Michigan Wolverines over the weekend on the recruiting trail, but that’s just the nature of recruiting.
Michigan football did get some good news on Sunday as three-star EDGE Dominic Nichols became the 23rd verbal commitment of the 2024 class.
Nichols is 6-foot-5, 252 pounds, and is drawing comparisons to both Mike Morris and David Ojabo. Clearly, he’s a guy that hasn’t reached his potential. Michigan football has a strong history of developing EDGE rushers and defensive linemen for the NFL.
So this move makes sense for Michigan football and Nichols, who was also considering Wisconsin and Clemson. He’s a high three-star, ranked 433rd overall (28th among EDGE), and here’s an in-depth breakdown of what his commitment means for the Michigan Wolverines.
Other recruiting tidbits for Michigan football
The bit of bad news I was referring to in the opening sentence is concerning four-star cornerback Bryce West, who committed to Ohio State over the weekend.
It wasn’t a huge shock. It was sort of expected with all of the expert projections trending that way in recent weeks. Still, it was a blow.
However, Michigan football has some solid options on the board, and losing West isn’t a reason to panic. The Michigan Wolverines are still in the mix for four-star cornerback Aaron Scott, also from Ohio, plus U-M hosted two other four-star cornerbacks on official visits over the weekend.
Scott is the next recruitment to watch. Landing one of the two elite cornerbacks from Ohio would be huge and that’s probably the No. 1 recruitment to follow in the coming weeks. Justin Scott is still out there too, but Michigan football seems to have faded a bit.
Lastly, in a bit of promising news for the Michigan Wolverines, they appear to have taken the lead in the recruitment of top-50 wideout Gatlin Bair.
Bair is ranked 44th overall via the 247 Sports composite rankings. He’s No. 40 overall via the On3 industry rankings, and following his official visit, Michigan football received an expert projection to land the wideout that runs the 100-meter dash in 10.15 (faster than Tyreek Hill).
The Wolverines are the leader now via the On3 prediction machine. Yet, Oregon and Boise State are still in the mix. The Broncos will host Bair for an unofficial visit at the end of July.
After that, we should have a better idea of where things stand. The speed demon has said he wants to make a decision before his high school season starts.
However, it should be noted that Bair is taking a Mormon mission and likely won’t enroll until 2026.
