Michigan football added its 23rd commitment in the 2024 recruiting class and here are three thoughts on Dominic Nichols.

You could see that a commitment was coming for Michigan football on Sunday from 2024 EDGE Dominic Nichols but he made it official on Sunday.

The Wolverines pulled out a solid recruiting win here and some of the top contenders were Wisconsin and Clemson.

Clemson offered recently and worked their way into the final three. Wisconsin hosted Nichols for an official visit the weekend before Michigan football.

The Badgers had momentum and even got some crystal ball projections. But the Wolverines turned things around on his official visit. Michigan football wrapped up his commitment on Sunday, which was the 23rd of the class.

The 6-foot-5, 252-pounder is ranked 433rd overall according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, as well as the No. 28 EDGE in the 2024 class.

Here are three thoughts on the newest Michigan football commitment.

Another talented EDGE

You’ve probably heard this a number of times, but don’t get caught up in the ranking of Nichols. He’s got all the measurable to an NFL player down the road.

His high school head coach compared Nichols to David Ojabo. He’s already 6-foot-5 or 6-foot-6 and when Mike Elston gets his hands on Nichols it’s going to be scary. Not to mention Ben Herbert.

Nichols is still very raw at this point but Michigan football has proven that it’s great at developing these types of players, which is why I feel good about this commitment, just like Devon Baxter’s.

The board is taking shape

Michigan football is probably going to wind up taking three or four EDGE recruits in the 2024 class. Now that Baxter and Nichols have committed within days of each other, we could see more movement.

Jacob Smith, a four-star EDGE with a brother already committed in this class (Jerod Smith), took his official visit this weekend and it feels like the Wolverines are the favorite.

Elias Rudolph is the other EDGE to watch. That would put Michigan football at 25 commitments total with some other offensive line, linebacker, and cornerback targets out there.

It feels like the class could push towards 30. There are a lot of seniors on this team, so it makes sense and I wouldn’t be shocked if more EDGE commitments came fairly soon.

A really solid June

Ohio State has pulled ahead of Michigan football in the 2024 rankings thanks to the commitment of Bryce West on Saturday.

The Buckeyes also have a really good shot of landing Aaron Scott too. However, Michigan football has still done a solid job this month. The Wolverines got six commitments total and still have the No. 3 ranked class in the 2024 rankings.

Hopefully, the Wolverines can add some more blue-chip prospects down the stretch but we have also seen that Michigan football can take lower-ranked players and make them stars.

And I wouldn’t be shocked if it happened again with Nichols, Baxter, and Jaden Smith — all players that have committed this month.
