There are some new crystal balls with Michigan football recruiting targets in 2024. Some are good for the Wolverines and some aren’t.

It’s been a busy week for Michigan football recruiting. The Wolverines just landed their first EDGE commitment of the 2024 class and are getting ready for another official visit weekend.

There aren’t a ton of visitors coming to campus but there are some important ones. However, there have also been some new trends with others that won’t be visiting this weekend.

These trends have been positive and negative for Michigan football. Let’s start with the positive. three-star EDGE Dominic Nichols has gotten another crystal ball projection for the Wolverines.

Things started trending toward Wisconsin but after Michigan football hosted him for an official visit, that swayed things and the Wolverines have better than a 95 percent chance of winning his commitment via the On3 prediction machine.

Nichols is 6-foot-5, 252 pounds, and ranks as the No. 28 EDGE in the 2024 class. He’s also 433rd overall in the 247 Sports composite rankings.

It’s disappointing that Michigan football missed out on four-star Darien Mayo, who committed to Clemson on Thursday, but the staff has always wanted Nichols and hopefully, they can close it out with a commitment soon.

A negative crystal ball for Michigan football

If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a hundred times but things can change recruiting in an instant. Deyvid Palepale seemed like a Michigan football lean following his official visit.

Yet, the Penn State Nittany Lions must have done well on their visit because they are now trending as the favorite to land the 6-foot-3, 288-pounder

Things aren’t over. Commitments aren’t crystal balls. But the Nittany Lions have definitely grabbed the momentum. Palepale is basically the top target on the board for a nose tackle, which could mean a board expansion at some point if things don’t get turned around.

The Wolverines have some versatile defensive line pieces which fit great in their defense. However, they haven’t landed a true nose/defensive tackle type and Palepale was the best bet.
