We’ve officially reached the beginning of official visit season!

It is May 31st, and Michigan football holds the #2 recruiting class in the country, behind only the Georgia Bulldogs. Yes, it is disappointing that the Wolverines have been dethroned from the #1 spot, but on the bright side, they are still ranked above Ohio State!

At 17 commits, Michigan football has the most commits in the nation, and it is widely expected that that number will dramatically increase in the month of June.

June should be a massive month for the Wolverines, with countless top targets making official visits. While the first weekend of June isn’t a huge one compared to the other weekends, it could still be a very important one that could yield multiple commitments.

Let’s look at the names that are expected to visit:

4 Star WR Jordan Shipp

A late addition to the list, Jordan Shipp will be on campus the first weekend of June. This is a huge addition and a potential commit candidate. Shipp is a teammate of fellow commits Jadyn Davis and Channing Goodwin.

His recruitment is a three-way battle between Michigan football, North Carolina, and North Carolina State. I’ve long held the belief that the Wolverines will eventually win out, and I still hold that opinion.

Especially with two of his teammates committed, it’s tough to predict Shipp to land elsewhere, despite the pushes from the local schools. I expect the staff to put the full-court press on Shipp, and wouldn’t be surprised to see him commit.

4 Star EDGE Brian Robinson

The talented EDGE from Ohio has had an interesting recruitment. Many felt that he would be an early piece of the 2024 class for Michigan football, yet he continuously chose not to make that decision, despite visiting very frequently.

Robinson is a smart kid who truly values academics, which is another reason many thought he would be a surefire Michigan man. However, other schools have been pushing for Robinson, and his delay is not a great sign for the Wolverines.

After visiting Michigan, Robinson will visit Kentucky (June 9th-12th) and Penn State (June 16th-18th). It seems to be a three-way battle for his commitment, with Michigan and Kentucky fighting for first.

Having the first official visit in a recruitment like Robinson’s isn’t a great factor. As I’ve said, recency bias is very real amongst recruits, and having the first OV could hurt Michigan football. This is a recruitment where I don’t know what to think.

Robinson definitely fits the mold of a Michigan player, but he very well could end up waiting himself out of a spot, as the Wolverines continue to gain momentum with other EDGE recruits.

I do not expect Robinson to commit this weekend, and I no longer expect him to be a member of the 2024 class. But who knows, Michigan has a lot to pitch to EDGE recruits, and if they really push, they could land him.

4 Star EDGE Jacob Smith

Now, to an EDGE recruit with a very real chance of committing. Smith is the brother of Michigan commit Jerod Smith. The Wolverines have gained all the momentum in this recruitment, and I do think that they’ll end up winning his commitment.

Smith released a top six that included Michigan, Nebraska, Kentucky, Notre Dame, Georgia, and Alabama. The latter two do not appear to be prioritizing Smith at the moment, and Notre Dame seems to be out as well, leaving Michigan, Kentucky, and Nebraska.

I expect Michigan football to win Smith’s commitment. Jacob and Jerod want to play together in college, and obviously Michigan already has Jerod’s commitment. I think there is a good chance that Smith makes it official on his visit.

4 Star Safety Marquis Gallegos

A relatively unknown name amongst Michigan fans, the California safety will officially visit the Wolverines less than a month after receiving an offer. Michigan has been expanding the secondary board as momentum has begun to fade amongst top prospects, and Gallegos is a new target.

Gallegos appears willing to leave California, however, it’s rare to see a prospect from California end up at Michigan, so this will be a very uphill battle. Other top contenders appear to be USC, UCLA, and Oregon.

I would bet on Gallegos staying on the West Coast, but you never know. Michigan does a great job on official visits, and they could definitely wow Gallegos enough to really move the needle in his recruitment.

Conclusion

It’s a small list compared to the coming weekends, but still, one that could yield multiple commits. Jordan Shipp and Jacob Smith appear the most likely to commit, but with the way this year has gone, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Wolverines pull something off.
