The EDGE board for Michigan football recruiting is getting more clarity as four-star Darien Mayo has been projected to the Wolverines.

Michigan football might not have the No. 1 recruiting class anymore according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, but the Wolverines are still killing it in 2023 and the momentum continues to surge ahead.

EDGE recruiting has been interesting to follow this cycle for Michigan football and there have definitely been some moving parts. However, Jacob Smith (EDGE), the brother of Jerod Smith, is going to visit Michigan football twice in June.

Smith will get to take his official visit and then will visit as a guest of his brother according to Maize and Brew. We recently included Jacob Smith as one of our five candidates to be the Wolverines’ next commitment in 2024 and that’s one reason why.

At any rate, another EDGE that recently announced a June (16th) visit to Michigan football is four-star recruit Darien Mayo.

Another 2024 recruiting projected to Michigan football

The 6-foot-7, 247-pounder is actually ranked in the top 100 overall by On3 and Rivals in the 2024 class, yet ESPN and 247 Sports have him a little lower. That puts his 247 Sports composite ranking at 181 overall.

Mayo is out of Good Counsel in Olney, Maryland. The Wolverines have established a strong recruiting presence in the DMV and it sounds like they are now the favorite to land Mayo, at least according to a new expert projection from On3.com.

Chad Simmons, the lead recruiting expert for On3, put in a prediction for Michigan football, which is huge considering Mayo is also being recruited heavily by Ohio State, USC, Clemson, and South Carolina, which each made the cut in his top five.

Simmons reports a different visit date than 247 Sports (June 23rd) but indicated that Mayo could make a decision soon after that. He also reported that Mayo has been impressed by Michigan’s NFL production at the position, which isn’t a shock — people call it EDGE U for a reason.

There haven’t been any other projections at this time, but the On3 prediction machine gives the Wolverines a 76-percent chance right now to add another blue-chip player to an already impressive 2024 recruiting haul.
