Michigan Basketball should know something on Rayj Dennis soon
Michigan basketball could really use the commitment of guard Rayj Dennis and it sounds like a decision could be coming soon.
Before the decommitment of Caleb Love, Michigan basketball already needed more help from the transfer portal, and that need only grew larger when the former North Carolina Tar Heel reopened his recruitment.
There are a few factors at play but Michigan basketball hosted Dennis for a visit even before Love decommitted. Dennis, a dynamic scoring guard that is a graduate transfer from Toldeo, scored more than 19 points per game last season and also averaged 5.8 assists.
Dennis is just 6-foot-2, so his addition would likely mean that Nimari Burnett would bump up and start at the three. George Washington III is also a name to watch at the 2/3 next season and hopefully, the smooth-shooting freshman can make an early impact.
As far as Dennis, he would add playmaking and scoring that’s desperately needed. Dug McDaniel averaged 8.9 points per game last season and he’s the leading scorer slated to be on this roster.
I do see him averaging double figures next season, but the Wolverines need more scorers, which is why Dennis is so important.
Is a commitment announcement coming?
So when will a decision come? According to Davis Moseley of The Michigan Insider, it should come soon, maybe as soon as this weekend, although he also reported that a decision could be tied to Terrance Shannon.
Shannon is deciding to stay in the NBA draft or return to Illinois. It’s hard to know if his going back would be a positive for Illinois or a negative. Either way, Dennis would have a big role at Michigan and a chance to be the lead guy.
Dennis has been crystal balled to Illinois but that was weeks ago now and a commitment still hasn’t followed. Illinois would probably be my bet, but there are a few reasons to think Michigan basketball could win out.
Regardless of the choice, we at least should know soon…relatively soon.
