Michigan Wolverines news: AJ Henning stays in Big Ten, new transfer targets, and more
In our latest Michigan Wolverines news roundup, AJ Henning has found a new home, Michigan basketball is talking to more transfers and more.
It will always bum me out a little that AJ Henning didn’t have a bigger role with the Michigan football team. When he signed as a recruit, I thought he would be a star.
Things didn’t quite work out that way but Henning still played a valuable role in his time with the Michigan Wolverines. His opening touchdown against Ohio State in 2021 will always be remembered and he was one hell of a kick/punt returner.
But I understand that he wanted to play a bigger role in the offense and I guess that wasn’t going to happen with Michigan football.
Henning has found a new home after entering the transfer portal. He will be playing in the Big Ten for Northwestern, but it makes sense. Henning committed to Michigan football out of the state of Illinois, so going to a team close to home is logical.
Plus, we all know the Wildcats can use playmakers and Henning can still be that in my opinion. He’s as dynamic as anyone else on that roster right now. So good for Northwestern.
It’s a bummer for the Michigan Wolverines as I said, but it sounds like Cole Cabana might be in the mix for return duties and there are some solid options for returning kicks and punts next season.
Michigan Wolverines in touch with multiple hoops transfers
The Michigan basketball team has two open scholarships and it’s clear that the Wolverines are after more shooting as Juwan Howard has been in touch with a couple of guards.
One of them is Jaylin Sellers, a 6-foot-4 guard from Ball State. Sellers is a stellar 3-point shooter and he would fill that need left by Jett Howard who is headed to the NBA draft.
Beyond that, Michigan basketball didn’t have enough guard depth or shooting last season. Adding another guard would add some insurance too in case Jaelin Llewellyn isn’t able to get healthy or isn’t able to return to the form he had at Princeton.
Another guard that recently entered the transfer portal and is getting interest from Michigan basketball is Andrew Taylor out of Marshall.
Taylor has played point guard and shooting guard in his career and he would be a combo guard for the Michigan Wolverines. Dug McDaniel is going to be the starter next season and is one of the bright spots on this roster, so adding Taylor as a depth piece or combo guard is what makes sense.
Regardless of his position, Michigan basketball could use more playmaking and Taylor could provide that with more than four assists per game last season to go along with 20.2 points per game. He also shot 36.4 percent from the field.
The problem is that Michigan basketball is far from the only contender for the 6-foot-3 scoring guard originally out of Kentucky.
Another crystal ball for Michigan football
I’Marion Stewart has been trending to Michigan football for months now, but he picked up another crystal ball projection to the Michigan Wolverines on Thursday from Allen Trieu of 247 Sports.
Stewart is a four-star wide receiver and one of the top recruits in the state of Illinois for the 2024 class. He’s 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, and ranked seventh in his home state, as well as 315th overall.
Stewart is the fourth recruit to get an expert projection to Michigan football this week as Cole Sullivan, Aaron Chiles, and Jeremiah Beasley have also gotten recent predictions to commit to the Michigan Wolverines.
As we have been saying, when it comes to recruiting, it’s full speed ahead.
