3 thoughts on Cole Sullivan’s commitment to Michigan football
Michigan football has landed another commitment in the 2024 class as three-star linebacker Cole Sullivan is the latest pledge and here are three thoughts for the Wolverines.
It took less than five days for Michigan football to land another verbal commitment in the 2024 class following the pledge of Channing Goodwin last Sunday.
On Friday, Cole Sullivan announced his commitment to Michigan football. The expert projections and crystal balls have liked the Wolverines for the past couple of weeks in this recruitment and the three-star linebacker from Pennsylvania posted early on Friday morning that he was making a commitment.
At 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, Sullivan is a productive linebacker. He’s ranked 597th overall according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. However, Sullivan was expected to take official visits to Notre Dame and Michigan State, while Stanford and Penn State were in the mix too.
Last season, the linebacker registered 117 tackles, two sacks, and four pass breakups, and here are three thoughts on his commitment to the Wolverines.
The momentum continues
Sullivan might not be the highest-ranked commitment, but who cares? The Michigan football coaching staff has proven time and again that it knows better than the recruiting services.
Plus, Sullivan is a kid that had legit offers and interest from teams like Notre Dame, Michigan State, and Penn State. If you win a recruitment against those teams, that’s always a good thing.
Sullivan is an athlete, listed as a linebacker, and has a nice upside. Jimmy Rolder and Micah Pollard weren’t top-100 recruits either and both look solid early in their Michigan football careers.
Sullivan is a good football player and he’s the 17th overall commitment. Michigan football has the No. 1 class right now according to 247 Sports and 11 of their commitments are ranked as four-star prospects or higher.
Multiple sports are possible
According to EJ Holland of The Wolverine, Sullivan is a guy that could play a few different spots such as EDGE, linebacker, or even safety.
The stats bear that out as Sullivan has the numbers of a three-down linebacker. Four pass breakups are impressive and that could be why Michigan football doesn’t seem worried about the number of linebackers it is potentially taking this class.
The more you think about that, the more this take makes sense with Jeremiah Beasley and Aaron Chiles both viewed as Michigan leans at this point. Beasley is one of the top recruits in Michigan in the 2024 class, while Chiles is ranked 76th overall.
Both have received crystal ball projections for U-M in the past two weeks.
The opposite of a year ago
Notre Dame still has a really good recruiting class so far despite this miss, but the Wolverines are definitely winning their share of the battles in 2024, which they didn’t do in 2023.
Sullivan is another that Notre Dame was pushing for. He was going to take an official visit to Notre Dame before the commitment. Michigan State too.
A year ago at this time, Michigan football fans were panicking and they were also being mocked by the Spartans and Fighting Irish faithful.
Now?
Not so much, which probably has something to do with all the recruiting wins, as well as the back-to-back Big Ten titles and College Football Playoff berths.
