Michigan Football has work to do with 5-star Brandon Baker
Michigan football was named as the best fit for five-star offensive tackle Brandon Baker by a 247 Sports analyst, but the Wolverines have work to do.
During a recruiting roundtable by 247 Sports on Monday, recruiting analyst Blair Angulo suggested that in terms of five-star offensive tackle, Brandon Baker, Michigan football is the best fit.
That’s not an opinion based on recruiting intel. Just the fact that Michigan football has been elite in terms of developing offensive linemen. Sherrone Moore’s work speaks for itself and the Wolverines have won the Joe Moore Award two years running in addition to all the NFL draft picks.
Baker is 6-foot-5, 285 pounds out of Mater Dei. He’s ranked 32nd overall in the 247 Sports composite rankings and is the No. 1 offensive tackle in the 2024 class
As you’d expect, the competition for his commitment is hot and heavy. Oregon, USC, Ohio State, Alabama, Michigan, Georgia, and also Nebraska is in the mix. The Huskers are a different name there but they have gotten him on campus twice (Michigan is still at zero).
That’s why even though Michigan football is in the mix, there is a lot of work to do.
Michigan football needs to get Baker on campus multiple times
I don’t see the Wolverines winning this recruitment with one visit. There was talk of him coming for an unofficial visit this spring but it hasn’t happened.
At some point, if Michigan football is going to be viewed as a contender, it has to get Baker on campus. He already has official visits set up with Georgia and Ohio State. Beyond that, Baker has visited USC nine times and Oregon five times, including this spring.
Ideally, Michigan football would be able to get Baker on campus this summer, maybe even for the recruiting BBQ, and then get him back for a game this fall (on an official visit).
There is a path for the Wolverines. But they do already have five pledges on the offensive line. That won’t impact Baker though. Plus there is still a need for offensive tackles.
Baker has talked about taking his recruitment into the fall and for the Wolverines, that could be an ideal scenario.
