Mazi Smith continued the Michigan football streak of first-round draft picks, plus we have much more in our Michigan Wolverines news roundup.

It was a great night to be a Michigan football fan as the Wolverines had a first-round selection in the NFL draft for the fifth consecutive year after Mazi Smith went 26th overall to the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft.

I had a feeling that Smith had the best chance of any Michigan Wolverines player to get drafted. DJ Turner was right there and should come off the board sometime on day two, but Smith is a 325-pound nose tackle for a team that needed some beef.

The Eagles are no joke and they pushed around the Cowboys last season. But with former Michigan football standout, Smith, in the trenches, that won’t be as easy. Mazi had just 0.5 sacks during his Michigan Wolverines career, but he’s an elite run-stuffer.

At any rate, it the pick sure made future teammate Micah Parsons pretty happy.

The 300-pounders who can impact the game are rare and it’s why Mazi Smith ended up being a first-rounder.

My comp for him has always been Vince Wilfok. He can bull rush, yet won’t get many sacks. However, Smith will play in the NFL for a very long time because of what he can do against the run, which you still have to be able to stop to win football games.

No. 1 2025 QB Bryce Underwood visits Michigan Wolverines

The gears have shifted to the 2025 class for the quarterback position and Kirk Campbell, the QB coach is putting in work.

Campbell has Michigan football in the mix for a number of elite quarterbacks. Ryan Montgomery is one, but another is five-star QB Bryce Underwood, who is from the state of Michigan and happens to be the No. 1 QB in the 2025 class.

Underwood visited the Michigan Wolverines once again on Thursday and that was the third time this spring for Underwood. As you can imagine, he’s being heavily recruited. Ohio State is right there in the mix along with a bunch of other powerhouses.

Ohio State really seems focused on getting Underwood, but they aren’t alone and it’s looking like Michigan football is a real player for the top QB in 2025.

A Michigan football commitment is expected Friday

For a short time on Thursday, there was some concern about three-star offensive lineman Jake Guarnera who is set to announce his commitment at 5 PM EST on Friday.

Josh Henschke flipped his Futurecast prediction from the Michigan Wolverines to Penn State for about 15 minutes, before flipping it back.

The Rivals reporter said it was the “wildest” 15 minutes of his career. As a fan, when you see an expert, especially one plugged in like Henschke flip a pick that close to a commitment, it makes you concerned.

However, everything seems under control and no other exert projections have changed so Michigan football fans should expect the commitment of the top-500 center later today.
