One of the top targets in the state of Michigan has re-opened his recruitment and Michigan football is an early favorite for Jamir Benjamin.

Michigan football is off to a really strong start in the 2024 recruiting class. The Wolverines are ranked third right now in the team rankings for 2024 via the 247 Sports composite rankings.

Ohio State moved in front of Michigan football with a couple of recent commitments. The Buckeyes are also recruiting at a high level, but the point is that U-M has a lot of positive momentum, and with five-star QB Jadyn Davis on board, that should continue.

However, the biggest news item from Thursday has to do with the defensive side of the ball as a 2024 cornerback from West Bloomfield, Jamir Benjamin, decommitted from Stanford.

Benjamin is ranked 491st overall in the On3 Industry rankings and is the No. 10 player in the state of Michigan.

"“First of all, I would like to thank Stanford University for the opportunity they’ve given me,” Benjamin said of his decommitment “I appreciate the relationships I’ve built with Coach Williams, Coach Taylor, and the rest of the staff. After a long conversation with my family, I have decided to re-open my recruitment and de-commit from Stanford University. I will be making a decision Father’s Day week.”"

On3 Prediction machine has Michigan football as the favorite

Michigan football is one of 30 programs to have offered the 5-foot-10, 170-pound corner. It seems like he would fit for the Wolverines just based on going to Stanford. You know he would at least fit from an academic standpoint and does have a Michigan offer.

Yet, it’s hard to know what the staff thinks at this point but making a push for Benjamin makes sense to me. He’s ranked inside the top 500 and is one of the better players in the state.

Beyond that, things haven’t been going that well with Aaron Scott and Bryce West, two elite cornerback prospects from the state of Ohio. Both have gotten crystal ball projections to the Buckeyes.

That doesn’t mean things can’t change but with zero cornerback commitments, Benjamin would make sense. He hasn’t visited since last year but the On3 prediction machine gives Michigan football a 50 percent chance to win his commitment after he re-opened his recruitment.

We’ll see if Michigan football gets him on campus for a visit. West Bloomfield has been a stronghold for the Wolverines and it will be interesting to see what they do with Benjamin.
