Breaking down Michigan’s offensive depth chart after spring
By Chad Fisher
Tight End
Michigan football lost sure-handed tight end, Luke Schoonmaker, to the NFL Draft, but return perhaps one of the most hyped tight ends in recent memory in sophomore Colston Loveland.
As a true freshman last season, he showed amazing promise and the ability to make explosive plays. His 45-yard touchdown against Ohio State was the highlight of his season and he’s a guy that will feast in one-on-one situations.
If defenses don’t double-team him they will pay a tremendous price. The 6’5’’ 240 pound Idaho native was a steal on the recruiting trail and will enter the season as the bonafide number-one tight end in Harbaugh’s offense.
In the spring game, Michigan football split him out as a wide receiver to get more one-on-one matchups and that will be a goal of offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore this season.
They also added Indiana transfer AJ Barner to the fold. The 6’6’’ tight end hails from the state of Ohio and will help solidify the position and add needed depth. He hauled in 28 catches for 199 yards and three touchdowns last year for an underwhelming Hoosiers team. He’ll be a legit number two tight end for the Wolverines in the fall.
