Michigan Basketball: 3 takeaways from additions of Caleb Love and Tray Jackson
What’s next?
I don’t believe that the Michigan basketball roster is finalized at this point. We’ll see if there is any other roster movement at this point, but I wouldn’t be shocked if more Wolverines left via the transfer portal.
It will also be interesting to see if the talk about Hunter Dickinson returning to Michigan basketball will pick up more momentum. Dickinson is still talking to the Wolverines and they are one of the teams he’s considering according to a report by 247 Sports.
I don’t know if Love will move the needle for Dickinson to want to return. I’m sure there would still need to be a significant NIL deal to get him back. Plus, some fences would need to be mended.
Michigan has added three former top-100 recruits in the transfer portal and two of them are former Mcdonald’s All-Americans (Nimari Burnett and Love). Burnett is an elite defender and a five-star talent. He also averaged a 3-point make per game for Alabama last season in a season that was interrupted by injuries.
If Burnett and Love can meet their potential next season, and if Tarris Reed and Dug McDaniel can take the second-year leaps we all expect, that will be the key to getting back to the tournament.
The Wolverines still have a lot of offense to replace from last season but Michigan’s roster is in a much better place and who knows, another addition or two could be on the way. A big-time wing or big man would be preferred.
Overall though, I think Juwan and the coaching staff have done a great job of adding depth, talent, versatility, and scoring in the past week.
