In our latest Michigan Wolverines news roundup, Michigan hockey is back in the Frozen Four, a former assistant coach is in the Final Four, and more.

It took overtime and a comeback to beat Penn State in the Allentown Regional Final on Sunday night but the Michigan Wolverines punched their ticket to another Frozen Four.

Michigan hockey will be making the trip for the second straight year after losing in the national semifinals last season in the Frozen Four to Denver. This time around, the Wolverines will take on Quinnipiac, which knocked out Ohio State on Sunday by a score of 4-1.

However, for much of the game Sunday, it didn’t seem like the Michigan Wolverines were going to be able to find the net. It took over 52 minutes of gameplay before Adam Faintilli, the nation’s leading scorer, evened the score at 1-1.

Then, 52 seconds into overtime, Mackie Samoskevich blasted Michigan hockey back to the Frozen Four, keeping the Wolverines’ national title hopes alive and well.

Minnesota, which Michigan beat for the Big Ten championship, also made the Frozen Four. The Golden Gophers will take on Boston in the other semifinal on April 6.

Former Michigan basketball assistant coaches San Diego State to Final Four

If Michigan basketball fans are looking for a reason to cheer for someone in the Final Four, we’ve got one since former Wolverines assistant Brian Dutcher is the head coach of SDSU.

The Aztecs knocked off Creighton by one point on Sunday to earn the program’s first-ever trip to the Final Four. Dutcher has been the head coach for six seasons now following the retirement of Steve Fisher — the head coach that led Michigan basketball to a national title in 1989.

Fisher was also the head coach that recruited the Fab Five to Michigan basketball and Dutcher was instrumental in that process. He was the lead recruiter for Juwan Howard and Juwan probably doesn’t play for the Michigan Wolverines without the impact of Dutcher.

Dutcher spent decades working under Fisher as an assistant and now, he’s two wins away from winning a national championship as a head coach.
