Michigan baseball is building some momentum after a sweep of the Penn State Nittany Lions. Michigan softball also beat Ohio State on Sunday.

It’s been an up-and-down start to the 2023 Michigan baseball season, but if this past weekend is a sign of things to come, the Wolverines are headed in the right direction.

After scoring a combined 25 runs during wins on Friday and Saturday against Penn State, the Wolverines notched a third straight win on Sunday, and thanks to a stellar effort from starting pitcher Noah Rennard, U-M finished sweeping its Big Ten opening series with a 3-1 win.

Rennard opened the game with a strike and the Wolverines were able to retire the side in order in seven of the nine innings. Penn State scored just one run and finished with four hits.

Jacob Denner got the credit for a save after coming on in the fifth and not allowing a run or a hit in 3 1/3 innings of work.

Michigan baseball had just five hits total but the Wolverines managed to scrape together two runs in the bottom of the third and another in the eighth. Jonathan Kim had two RBI in the win, while Cody Jefferis had the other. Mitch Voit had the only extra-base hit with a double.

The Wolverines will host Central Michigan on Tuesday, before traveling to Illinois for a three-game set next week. Michigan is 12-11 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten.

Michigan softball beats Ohio State

The Michigan softball team is playing two games against Ohio State on Sunday and the first one went to the Wolverines thanks to a 3-1 victory in extra innings.

Audre LeClair hit a home run for the Wolverines in the top of the third inning to tie the score against Ohio State before a throwing error by Ohio State allowed Michigan softball to grab a 3-1 lead in the top of the 10th.

Michigan was able to hang on for the win and improved to 14-11 on the season. Lauren Derkowski tossed all 10 innings and struck out 10 batters while allowing just six hits. She also gave up just one run and walked just one Buckeye.

Michigan softball has another game against Ohio State on Sunday, as well as a game on Monday to make up for two games delayed on Friday and Saturday due to weather.
