John Tonje

Another player that Michigan basketball has been in touch with is John Tonje from Colorado State, a guard that Michigan saw in the 2022 NCAA tournament.

Jonte is originally from Omaha, Nebraska and the Huskers are a team to watch. He averaged just 1.3 assists last season but is a solid 3-point shooter. He’s also 6-foot-5 so he’s probably more of a combo guard than a point guard in the eyes of the Wolverines.

Nebraska would likely want Tonje to start and take over from Sam Griesel. Tonje has heard from a bunch of other programs too, about 20 total.

Jonte made 1.8 3-pointers per game this past season and shot 38 percent from 3-point range. The season prior, he shot just over 36 percent and averaged more than nine points per game. Last season, he scored 14 for the Rams.

If Bufkin left for the draft, it’s possible he could step in as a starter at the two. But if not, he could be an ideal third guard behind Bufkin or McDaniel and he’d likely have the chance to win the starting point guard job, although I think Dug would be really hard to unseat.

Michigan basketball needs more guard depth. It needs guys who can shoot, and defend and not turn the ball over late, which is why Jonte is intriguing to me.
