Tyler Morris standing out during Michigan Football spring practices
Michigan football has to replace Ronnie Bell going into the 2023 season and one guy that could fill his shoes is Tyler Morris.
Right now, Tyler Morris has three receptions during his Michigan football career. But judging by the way he’s played this spring, he’s going to have a lot more in the 2023 season.
Ronnie Bell was the leading receiver in 2023 for Michigan football. He’s off to the NFL and for that matter, he put together a solid pro day last week in Ann Arbor.
However, his No. 8 is being worn by Morris now and there have been plenty of rumblings about him starting to look like Bell this spring.
One reason that the 6-foot, 175-pound wideout is starting to make a move up the depth chart is a comfort level with the quarterback.
Morris and J.J. McCarthy used to be teammates in high school before McCarthy transferred to IMG. That could certainly help Morris who is battling to take over some of the snaps vacated by Bell.
A.J. Henning is also expected to be in the mix for the slot position. Darrius Clemons is another name to know at wide receiver on the outside, but Morris, like Bell, is someone that could play all over the field.
In a meeting with the media on Monday, here’s what Morris said about his spring:
"“I feel like it’s going good. For me, it’s just a lot more comfortable,” Morris said. “Last year, freshman year, you’re trying to figure everything out, [get to] know the offense. You don’t really know just how the program works completely. I was still trying to come back from my knee [injury] a little bit. This year I felt just more comfortable, used to things, knowing how it goes. Not as much trying to figure everything out.”"
Morris has been mentioned a lot this spring by coaches and players as a guy that is putting together a strong spring. He was ranked 133rd overall when he finished in high school, but even that ranking doesn’t do him justice because of a knee injury.
Morris was ranked in the top 80 overall and he can be that kind of player for the Wolverines. He’s got great hands and athleticism. He’s a smooth route runner and it wouldn’t be surprising at all if he emerged as a trusted target for J.J. McCarthy next fall.
