In our latest Michigan Wolverines news roundup, Mason Parris captures a Big Ten wrestling title, the Big Ten Tournament bracket is set for Michigan basketball, and more.

The Big Ten wrestling championships took place over the weekend and the Michigan Wolverines were made proud by their heavyweight, No. 1 Mason Parris, who remained undefeated on the season and earned a 6-3 win over No. 2 Greg Kerkvliet of Penn State to capture a Big Ten title.

Parris is now 28-0 on the season and has been ranked No. 1 since his win earlier in the season over Kerkvliet.

Now, he’ll head to the NCAA Wrestling Tournament looking to win a national championship. As a team, the Michigan Wolverines took fifth in the Big Ten after winning the team title back in 2022.

Seven Michigan Wolverines will head to Tulsa for the NCAA tournament in two weeks with the chance to add more to the bracket through at-large selections. The tournament is March 16-18.

Michigan basketball will face Rutgers in the Big Ten tournament

After yet another late-game collapse by Michigan basketball on Sunday, the Wolverines dropped all the way to No. 8 in the Big Ten tournament seeding and will take on Rutgers on Thursday at 12:30 PM EST.

It’s a battle of teams trying to play their way off the bubble. A win over Rutgers won’t be enough to get Michigan in the field of 68. It will likely need to beat No. 1 seed Purdue in the quarterfinals.

However, the fact that Michigan can improve its resume with each of the first two games is important. It leads me to believe that if Michigan basketball is able to win those first two games, it would make the NCAA tournament.

Reaching the Big Ten title game would probably guarantee a berth, although winning the automatic bid might be the only sure thing.

Yet, with a favorable draw, at least from the mindset of improving the resume, Michigan basketball has one final chance to make the NCAA tournament, although it doesn’t seem likely.

Top-ranked Gymnastics showdown

The No. 2 Wolverines have a stellar gymnastics program and Michigan is hoping to win a national championship this season. The Wolverines will get tested on Monday as the No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners will invade Crisler Center for a top-2 showdown.

Oklahoma is 12-0 on the season, while Michigan is 12-2. Michigan recently claimed a co-championship in the Big Ten in gymnastics in the regulars season but beating Oklahoma would show the Wolverines are ready to win it all.

The match will be broadcast on ESPNU at 7:30 PM EST.
