Michigan football has an interesting competition going on at cornerback and one freshman is trying to work his way into the mix.

Monday was the first day of Michigan football spring practice and already, some of the new freshmen are making their presence felt.

Michigan football has a slew of early enrollees and a number of them even took part in Fiesta Bowl practices with the Wolverines. One of them was four-star cornerback Cameron Calhoun, who committed to Michigan right after the Ohio State game.

Calhoun was actually at the Ohio State game on a visit to the Buckeyes and committed to the Wolverines soon after the 45-23 win.

The four-star cornerback is ranked No. 391 overall in the 2023 class. Jyaire Hill is another four-star addition that enrolled early. Both were thought to be in the mix for the starting cornerback job opposite Will Johnson.

The Wolverines had two cornerbacks leave for the NFL draft. Gemon Green and DJ Turner both elected to enter the NFL draft instead of returning. Now, it’s led to what should be a heated competition for the starting job.

However, on the first day of spring practices, Cameron Calhoun turned some heads by making an interception and returning it all the way for a touchdown.

Cameron Calhoun is a name to know for Michigan football

Spring practice is spring practice. It’s not a game or anything but it’s still a really good thing to see as a Michigan football fan.

Calhoun is a guy that I’ve had high hopes for and someone that I thought was underrated when he committed. Of course, he was actually a three-star at the time of his pledge to the Wolverines.

Steve Clinkscale has proven to be a stellar coach of the cornerback position and with Calhoun, Jyaire Hill, Myles Pollard, and Ja’Den McBurrows to mold, I’m not overly concerned with the cornerback position going forward.

Will Johnson looks like he’s going to be an All-American caliber corner next season and beyond that, with Calhoun and others, there is more than enough talent to work with.
