Michigan Football, George Helow officially part ways
We have been wondering when Michigan football would get a change on staff and it came on Thursday as George Helow is moving on.
It’s not a surprise that George Helow won’t be coaching for Michigan football next season. In fact, it’s been a known secret for weeks.
That’s because the Wolverines went out and hired Chris Partridge and announced him as a linebackers coach, which is the job title that Helow was holding.
Yet, on Thursday, according to Bruce Feldman, Michigan football and Helow have agreed to part ways to allow him to explore other job opportunities.
Helow’s name has been mentioned with a couple of defensive coordinator openings and I’m sure he’ll be able to find a job somewhere with his experience at Maryland and Michigan.
As Feldman pointed out, Helow did a solid job the past two seasons with Michigan football and was part of the coaching staff both years as the Wolverines turned things around from the 2-4 season in 2020.
Junior Colson was a key part of that. He was a freshman All-American in 2021 and an All-Big Ten selection in 2022. Helow also did a solid job on the recruiting trail and did well in the state of Florida.
Michigan football coaching staff moving forward
However, Partridge is a former co-defensive coordinator and he was outstanding as a recruiter for Michigan football in the state of New Jersey.
There’s no doubt that he’ll be viewed as an upgrade and there’s a reason that Jim Harbaugh made the move to get him, despite having a solid coach already in place in Helow.
According to Chris Balas of The Wolverine, there was some thought about Helow becoming an analyst but you can understand him wanting to be an on-field coach.
We’ll see what happens but another coaching staff announcement could be coming. Balas reported earlier this week that Shemy Schembechler could be joining Jim Harbaugh’s staff as an off-field analyst.
Schembechler has long been a scout in the NFL and was just let go by the Raiders earlier this month. Harbaugh played for his father and adding another good eye for talent — a guy that’s been a trusted scout for years and one that loves Michigan football — sounds good to me.
So keep an eye out for more Michigan football coaching moves.
