The Michigan hockey team notched another big win on Friday night, defeating sixth-ranked Penn State by a score of 7-3.

Friday night was a big night for a couple of Michigan teams as the Wolverines hosted a top-10 matchup in hockey, as well as a top-six battle in wrestling.

Michigan hockey was looking to score another top-10 win after beating No. 2 Minnesota last Saturday and the Wolverines delivered.

Michigan hockey grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first period as Adam Fantilli scored after Jackson Hallum opened the scoring.

Penn State scored in the second, yet the Wolverines extended their lead to 4-1 after second-period goals from Philippe Lapointe and Rutger McGroarty. Fantilli assisted on both. Fantilli also scored another goal in the third period, as did Luke Hughes.

Fantilli was one of the three stars after a two-goal, two-assist showing. However, Erik Portillo was the No. 1 star after being credited with 51 saves. Michigan hockey had 27 shots on goal compared to 54 for the Nittany Lions.

The seventh-ranked Michigan hockey team will host Penn State again on Saturday at 7 p.m. as the Wolverines will look for a third straight win over a top-10 hockey team. U-M is now 15-9-1 overall and 7-8 in the Big Ten.

Michigan wrestling drops dual against Ohio State

Just like with hockey, the Big Ten is loaded when it comes to wrestling. It’s basically the SEC of wrestling except even better.

Last week, the third-ranked Wolverines traveled to Penn State for a dual and were defeated. Friday, Michigan wrestling hosted Ohio State and also suffered a disappointing loss, 23-15.

Yet, the bright spot for Michigan wrestling continues to be heavyweight Mason Parris who defeated the previous No. 1 last week.

Parris wrestled for the first time as the No. 1 on Friday and notched his 11th pin of the season over Ohio State’s Hogan Swenski. It wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit but Parris is now 20-0 on the season and a national championship could well be in his future.
