What’s next for Michigan Football after Matt Weiss is fired?
Michigan football fired co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss on Friday and we look at what’s next for the Wolveines.
After two years with the Michigan football program, Matt Weiss was relieved of his duties on Friday according to a release from the University of Michigan athletics department.
Weiss is caught up in an investigation centering on “computer crimes” that stem from something that happened in December. It appears as though it has to do with unauthorized access to emails but it’s hard to say what the investigation is going to lead to.
Regardless, Weiss won’t be back with Michigan football in 2023 after two seasons and a pair of Big Ten championships as quarterbacks coach in 2021, and QBs coach/co-offensive coordinator in 2022. Here’s the statement from Michigan:
"“After a review of University policies, the athletic department has terminated the appointment of co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss,” athletic director Warde Manuel said via the statement. “Consistent with university policy, we will have no further comment on this personnel matter.”"
Weiss released this statement:
“I am proud of the success we achieved over the last two seasons and grateful to all of the Michigan players, coaches and staff. The potential of Team 144 knows no bounds,” Weiss tweeted Friday.
“I have nothing but respect for the University of Michigan and the people who make it such a great place. I look forward to putting this matter behind me and returning my focus to the game I love.”
What’s next for Michigan football?
Obviously, the Wolverines will need to hire a new quarterbacks coach and potentially a new co-offensive coordinator.
To be frank, some fans were hoping Michigan football would bring in a new offensive mind after the flop in the Fiesta Bowl and some of the red-zone struggles last season.
Yet, no one expected Weiss to be gone. He seemed pretty close to Harbaugh and if Jim had gone to the NFL in the past two seasons, Weiss definitely would have gone with him.
Sherrone Moore is the offensive coordinator and he could continue in that role by himself, which would mean just hiring a quarterbacks coach. Or, Michigan football could go after a big-name hire for offensive coordinator or “passing-game coordinator” and QBs coach.
Our Kyler Kregel laid out a list of nine potential replacement candidates and it will be interesting to see who Jim Harbaugh hires as a replacement.
