9 candidates if Michigan Football needs to replace Matt Weiss
By Kyler Kregel
Former Wisconsin Badgers head coach Paul Chryst
Harbaugh and Chryst have a fairly public connection between them and their families, stemming from their shared experience with the San Diego Chargers from 1999-2000, with Jim being a quarterback for the Chargers in those seasons while Chryst coached the tight ends.
And beyond that, Paul Chryst’s older brother, Geep, was also Jim Harbaugh’s quarterbacks’ coach during his tenure with the San Francisco 49ers and was also the offensive coordinator and QB coach on those Chargers teams. Additionally, his son Keller played quarterback at Stanford, though for David Shaw and Tavita Pritchard, not Jim Harbaugh.
Chryst was recently fired from Wisconsin after his largely successful run as head coach had started to fizzle out. He went 67-26 overall, with three Big Ten West titles, a largely impressive mark, but again, the results the last few years showed signs of decline within the program.
Overall, the quarterback play out of Wisconsin has not been much to write home about, as the Badgers have featured a very run-heavy offense that did not place much emphasis on the QB position.
That does put him in a somewhat similar school of thought as Jim Harbaugh though, run-first offensive minds who love battering down defenses with their run game. He would not offer much in the way of innovation for Michigan football’s offenses but is a veteran quarterback coach with ties to Harbaugh.
