9 candidates if Michigan Football needs to replace Matt Weiss

Dallas Cowboys coaching assistant Scott Tolzien
Another former NFL quarterback, Tolzien was an All-Big Ten QB for the Wisconsin Badgers in 2010 before journeying to the NFL as a backup QB. He was claimed off of waivers by the San Francisco 49ers in 2011, and thus, spent two seasons as a backup QB for Jim Harbaugh there. He then went on to become a backup QB for the Indianapolis Colts, backing up former Harbaugh protégé Andrew Luck there.
He has since gone into coaching, working as an analyst at his alma mater for one season in 2019 before joining the Dallas Cowboys as a coaching assistant, helping offensive coordinator Kellen Moore create an effective offense for QB Dak Prescott and even Cooper Rush to thrive in.
Dallas’ offense ranks 4th in the NFL in scoring this season and is currently set to play in the second round of the NFL playoffs after knocking off Tom Brady and the Buccaneers in the Wild Card round.
Tolzien has not held any full-time position group of his own, so he would likely only be an option as a QB coach, with Harbaugh entrusting the play-calling to himself and Sherrone Moore and letting Tolzien simply develop and mentor QB J.J. McCarthy.
He’s for certain the most unproven option on this list, but as a former QB under Jim, could certainly relate well to his players and as a recruiter. And at just 35 years old, the Illinois native is just getting started in his coaching career and could rise up the ranks quickly.
