9 candidates if Michigan Football needs to replace Matt Weiss
By Kyler Kregel
Arizona QB coach Jimmie Dougherty
A longtime West Coast assistant, Dougherty got his start under Jim Harbaugh as the WR coach for the San Diego Toreros (FCS), and then shifted around, coaching tight ends and quarterbacks while Jim Harbaugh was still there.
Dougherty then went on to coach at Washington under Steve Sarkisian, but soon found his way back to Jim Harbaugh’s 2016 Michigan football staff, working as an offensive analyst there.
Currently, Dougherty works as QB coach and Passing Game Coordinator, effectively the same role that Weiss held for Michigan, though this one for former Michigan assistant Jedd Fisch at Arizona.
Ultimately, Dougherty brings a much more experienced resume to the table and has been a big piece of Arizona’s turnaround lately. The Wildcats’ offense ranked just 118th in scoring and 78th in passing yardage per game the year prior to Fisch and Dougherty’s arrival, and are now up to 39th in scoring, and 4th nationally in passing yardage.
Dougherty’s ties to Harbaugh would certainly help him step in and be a strong influence right away, helping to marry his passing schemes with Harbaugh’s and Moore’s run schemes to form a dynamic offensive attack in 2023.
