With the news that Michigan football co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Matt Weiss, was placed on administrative leave for potential crimes, it seems quite likely that the Wolverines may be needing a new quarterbacks coach here quite soon. We provide you with a list of different options that Michigan could potentially be interested in.

Jim Harbaugh, fresh off of announcing his return to Michigan football, now has to deal with a messy situation unfolding as one of his top assistants has been placed on leave for potential internet crimes. While there are a variety of potential meanings, there is heavy speculation that this most likely means the end of Matt Weiss’ two-year stint in Ann Arbor.

Given that Weiss is co-offensive coordinator, alongside Sherrone Moore, Jim Harbaugh will have two different ways of approaching this vacancy: hiring a new co-offensive coordinator to split play-calling duties with Sherrone Moore while coaching the quarterbacks or promoting Moore to outright offensive coordinator and simply hiring a quarterbacks coach to replace Weiss. Thus, that gives Harbaugh and Michigan football some options here.

Let’s take a look at a few names to watch:

Michigan football offensive analyst Kirk Campbell

If the Wolverines want to stay in-house, analyst Kirk Campbell, makes the most sense. He joined Michigan football this past January after he was fired from his role as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Old Dominion. He and head coach Ricky Rahne had helped ODU see a bit of an offensive turnaround there, but differences over which QB to play led to Rahne ousting Campbell and opting for someone new.

So, in a sense, Campbell has the in-house experience here at Michigan, with an already established connection to All-Big Ten QB J.J. McCarthy, and does have some prior offensive coordinator experience.

His overall resume, however, is a little light, with just the two seasons as OC/QB coach at Old Dominion and then a few years working as an analyst at Penn State under Rahne. If Michigan football did opt to promote Campbell, this would be one hire where Jim Harbaugh would be trusting his own evaluation, believing he truly does have a “rising star”, as some have labeled Campbell.

What is also interesting to note here is that Campbell has also begun following a handful of 2024 and 2025 quarterback recruits on Twitter, perhaps a sign that he may believe he will get the promotion and need to hit the ground running on recruiting.
