Michigan Basketball: 3 takeaways from a scrappy win over Northwestern
By Nick Popio
2. Michigan basketball won without relying so heavily on Hunter Dickinson
Dug McDaniel had a career day, while Kobe Bufkin put in a team-high 20 points in the win. One of the big storylines from the win was that others besides Dickinson that stepped up effectively.
Jett Howard, McDaniel, and Bufkin all surpassed him in the stat line. They combined for 53 of Michigan’s 85 points on Sunday.
Dickinson didn’t do much on the interior because every time he touched it he got immediately double and triple-teamed. His first basket in the paint didn’t come until the seven-minute mark in the second stanza. He did finish with a double-double however including 15 boards, which is his new season-high.
It was a must-win game after blowing a rare road win in overtime at Iowa on Thursday. Although they are only 10-7 at the halfway mark of the season, they are alive in the Big Ten race for the time being. More opportunities are near to strengthen their conference record, but they can’t repeat what happened at Iowa and let it get away.
