Michigan Wolverines news: More on NCAA allegations, Jim Harbaugh’s future and more
Michigan football was hit with NCAA violations this week. Here’s the latest on that and Jim Harbaugh in our Michigan Wolverines news roundup.
Michigan football fans are frustrated with the news of the NCAA allegations being levied against the Michigan Wolverines following what seems like some very minor violations.
There was some contact during the COVID-19 pandemic that wasn’t allowed by the rule, as well as analysts doing some coaching of players, which isn’t technically allowed. However, it’s common practice and is actually expected to be changed this week.
However, the Level 1 infraction which has to do with Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh has to do with him taking recruits out for a burger according to Chris Balas of the Wolverine.
According to a report from The Athletic, Harbaugh mislead the NCAA during the investigation but we don’t know what exactly was said. However, the biggest crime, outside of not being forthcoming I suppose with NCAA investigators is taking kids out for a burger.
Never mind what USC and the other pay-for-play schools like Miami are doing. At any rate, Warde Manuel responded and it seems very much like the University will have Harbaugh’s back.
That’s a good thing. However, the NFL’s interest is still out there. Sam Webb reported that the Broncos are still doing their “due diligence” on Harbaugh. However, Jim isn’t allowed to talk to teams per his contract without informing Manuel.
So I don’t think there’s anything serious. For the Michigan football program and the athletic department as a whole, it will be important to support Harbaugh, who should fight any sort of suspension. One game seems pretty stiff even, let alone a multi-game suspension.
You can see how that would make him think twice if an NFL team came calling. Yet, as we have said recently, all signs are pointing to a return. This also shouldn’t preclude the Michigan Wolverines from making Harbaugh one of the highest-paid coaches in college football.
He certainly should be the highest-paid in the Big Ten.
DJ Turner is headed to the NFL draft
Another Michigan football player is headed out the door as DJ Turner has declared for the 2023 NFL draft. There was hope Turner might return but after two really good seasons as a starter, it’s not a surprise.
Turner was one of the top cornerbacks in the Big Ten this season and posted this on Twitter announcing the move on Friday.
Turner is 6-foot, 180 pounds, and notched three interceptions over the past two seasons. He was also credited with 17 pass breakups and honestly, I would be surprised if he lasted beyond the second day of the draft.
Along with Ronnie Bell, he is the most significant loss for Michigan football so far this offseason.
