Michigan football is looking to close strong in the 2023 recruiting class and here’s the latest on a trio of top targets for the Wolverines.

Tuesday was a good news/bad news sort of day for Michigan football on the recruiting front. Not bad as in a decommitment or anything.

But Malachi Coleman, a top-100 recruit (No. 68 overall via On3 consensus) was set to visit campus this weekend and instead, posted on Twitter that he will visit Colorado instead.

Of course, this does seem like bad news for Michigan’s chances. Coleman was committed to Nebraska and is the top-ranked player in that state. Matt Rhule has also worked hard to get him back in the fold and it seems to be trending in that direction.

Jay Harbaugh made an in-home visit for the wide receiver/EDGE and there was some thought Michigan football could make a move this weekend.

Now that won’t happen but it might not be game over. Coleman has talked about deciding in the late signing period after his commitment and if that happens, Michigan could still have a shot down the road for the elite 6-foot-5 athlete.

Ryan Walters to Purdue is good for Michigan football

Walters did a great job at Illinois and it was a good hire for the Boilermakers. It could also help Michigan on the recruiting trail in the 2023 class.

Jyaire Hill is a top-200 cornerback out of Chicago and the battle between Michigan and Illinois for his commitment has heated up. Walters played a key role in that and his leaving could open the door for Michigan to close the deal.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh also made a trip to see Roderick Pierce, another prospect that Illinois and Michigan are battling for. He’s a defensive tackle formerly committed to Wisconsin. He’s 6-foot-3, 290 pounds, and ranked No. 581 overall.

Walters departure could hurt Illinois’ chances there too and Michigan currently has a 90-percent chance to win his commitment according to the On3 prediction machine. The Wolverines have an 87-percent chance to land Hill, who would be among the highest-ranked commits in the class.

With Early National Signing Day just more than a week away, it would be nice to get both of those recruits in the fold and as of right now, it seems there is a decent chance that happens.
