Ronnie Bell

It’s weird to say that Ronnie Bell, who’s been one of Michigan’s best receivers for years, stepped up. However, he did just that, but not as a receiver.

He put together a solid game in that regard, gathering three catches for 44 yards. But his biggest contribution came through the punt return game, something he hasn’t done in years.

With AJ Henning being another guy who didn’t play, Bell needed to be the guy who could go back and provide a spark. He was able to step up and provide it when Michigan football needed it the most.

Down 17-10, finally forcing a punt after back-to-back touchdowns, Bell had an incredible 40-yard return that put Michigan inside Illinois’ 40-yard line. The ensuing drive wasn’t great, but it resulted in a field goal, which in a two-point win is critical.

I said about Loveland’s big play, and I’ll say it about Bell’s as well: without that play, Michigan probably doesn’t win this game.

What an impact for Bell to make on his final game in the Big House.
