3 overreactions from Michigan Football’s win over Illinois
By Nick Popio
These are three of the most absurd overreactions from Michigan’s anxiety-riddled victory over the Fighting Illini on Senior day in the Big house.
Illinois was coming off two close losses in a row but entered Michigan stadium confident at ruining Senior day for the Wolverines. They were the first team to lead Michigan football in the fourth quarter, but the maize and blue dug in and did what they needed to do to stay unblemished. Even without its best players, Michigan proved that it is championship worthy.
Here are the three overreactions from the win.
1. Michigan could have won outright without Jake Moody
This is a flat-out overreaction to the highest extent. Michigan needed its award-winning kicker to provide the points in Saturday’s narrow escape of the Illini. If Michigan doesn’t have Moody available on Saturday afternoon, then they lose. It’s that simple. He is a lifesaver and one of Michigan’s greatest to ever kick the football.
Money Moody is now 25-30 on the year. During his junior campaign, he went 23-25. He will surpass his point total from last season soon and kicked a new career high of 54 yards earlier in the schedule against Michigan State. There’s no doubt that he will be kicking for an NFL franchise on Sundays next fall.
Believe it or not, this was the first time that Moody drilled a game-winning kick in his life. You would have thought that he had done it before in high school or in Ann Arbor, but that’s not the case.
He did kick the game clincher on the road in Lincoln last year if you want to count that as a last-second kick to win the game.
