Michigan football gutted out a win over Illinois on Saturday, keeping a perfect season intact, and here are five things we learned.

After everything that happened in College Football Week 12, Michigan football fans should just thank their lucky stars that the Wolverines are still undefeated.

There were some frustrating moments in the win over Illinois. Still, it was impressive how Michigan football battled back. I thought the Wolverines were toast when Chase Brown gave Illinois the lead, but U-M battled and notched a huge win.

Illinois is a 7-4 team. I know they have now lost three in a row but that’s a good football team and once Blake Corum went down, it was a completely different game.

Michigan football was also without Donovan Edwards, Mike Morris, Luke Schoonmaker, Trevor Keegan, and more. Hopefully, they can all get healthy next week. But this offense is different without Corum and Edwards and that shouldn’t surprise anyone.

But Tennessee’s loss opens the door more for an 11-1 Michigan football team to make the playoff or at least make a good case for it and before we look ahead to “The Game” here are five things we learned from Michigan football’s win over Illinois.

Blake Corum is the most valuable player in college football

I don’t think this is new, but this Michigan offense looked a lot different once Corum left with what is being called a knee bruise.

Now, if you take C.J. Stroud away from Ohio State, the offense might look different. What also hurt was Edwards resting because he’s an explosive play waiting to happen in the running game and the passing game.

But losing Corum to injury was a nightmare scenario. He tried to give it a go but didn’t seem quite right. I’m sure he’s going to give it a go next week and hopefully he can because it’s hard to imagine Michigan beating Ohio State with Corum and everything he does.

When he’s on the field, running on third-and-five isn’t such a bad play call. Illinois has a really good defense and ranks in the top 5 in scoring, as well as No. 2 in pass defense in the Big Ten and run defense, so keep that in mind, but losing Corum for next week would be a huge blow, like it was on Saturday against Illinois.
