Michigan Football: Grading the Wolverines win over Nebraska
Special teams: A
Michigan football was nearly flawless on special teams again on Saturday. After allowing a blocked punt last week, Nebraska got close on one pressure. But Brad Robbins hit three punts and pinned one inside the 20. None were blocked and none were returned.
Jake Moody made both of his field goals and the kickoff coverage team allowed an average of just 17 yards per return. A.J Henning also had a 31-yard kickoff return which was the longest of the game by either team and in every way, Michigan won the special teams battle.
Coaching: A
Jim Harbaugh and his staff are doing exactly what they should be doing on offense. They are calling the right plays, the execution just needs to pick up in terms of passes. It’s close though.
But when you have a running back like Blake Corum (and Edwards) and an offensive like this one, you use it. You ride it all the way to another Big Ten championship if you can. It’s not boring — it’s winning football and we should enjoy it while we can.
Michigan football has shut out its opponents in four of the last five games in the second half and hasn’t allowed a second-half touchdown since Iowa. That’s five games.
Steve Clinkscale and Jesse Minter have been stellar and it looks like Michigan has a defense that might be even better than last year’s Big Ten title-winning defense.
We’ll see but the signs are very encouraging and few teams can dominate in the trenches the way that Michigan football can. Take solace in that.
