The offense is still misfiring

Michigan football’s passing game still left something to be desired on Saturday. Whether it was J.J. McCarthy with an overthrow or the receivers dropping a catchable ball, the passing game still isn’t functioning the way it should.

It didn’t help to have Luke Schoonmaker out. Remember this team is already without Erick All, who many thought was going to play his way into being an early-round draft pick, but it’s a little concerning to see the struggles with two weeks before “The Game.”

It’s not time to panic by any means. This offense is based on running the football and if that running game doesn’t work, the Wolverines are going to be in trouble. McCarthy did throw the ball really well in second-half games against Rutgers and Indiana, so he can do it, the consistency just hasn’t been there.

He’s got all the skills needed. McCarthy just needs a jolt of confidence and his receivers making some plays would surely help. Ronnie Bell stepped up as always but Cornelius Johnson missed a perfect chance at an explosive play and he wasn’t alone.

The guys also need to do a better job of getting open. It’s hard to put a finger on why they have struggled to create separation, but the receiver room doesn’t lack for talent and somehow, someway, the Wolverines need that talent to step forward in the next few weeks.
