The right spot for Michigan Football in Week 8 CFB Power Rankings
By Andrew Brion
How does Michigan football stack up against the best college football teams in the country? Here is a power ranking of the Top 10.
The regular season in College Football is officially halfway over, and Michigan football is sitting at 7-0. Facing a bye week with no game to write about, I thought I’d release my power rankings heading into week 8.
After an extremely impressive win over Alabama, (first in 15 years), The Volunteers sit atop my College Football Power Rankings heading into week 8. There is no team with a better regular season win in my opinion since Oregon took down the Buckeyes at the Shoe in week 2 of 2021. Tennessee in my opinion has a top 5 WR in Jaylin Hyatt, who had an absolutely monster Randy Moss-type day, grabbing 6 passes, for 207 yards and 5 touchdowns. Not only do they have a monster playmaker, but they also have my Heisman front-runner in Herndon Hooker. Buckeyes fans can claim Stroud is #1 all they want, but if Tennessee takes down Georgia, and wins the SEC, the award is Hookers to lose.
It would be disrespectful to put anyone other than the Bulldogs at #2. Georgia has proved all the doubters wrong, and have completely reloaded their roster, and is eyeing another National Championship run. We all remember what the Bulldogs did to Michigan football last season and with a top 5 defense and an improved Stetson Bennett, college football better watch out for the Dawgs.
Even without a proven schedule, the Ohio State Buckeyes still deserve a top-4 spot among college football teams. The Buckeyes have reloaded a depleted offense from last year, who lost 2 first-round WRs, and have quickly replaced them with two Biletnikoff hopefuls, Marvin Harrison and Emeka Egbuka. The Buckeyes will still need to prove themselves this season, with ranked matchups incoming against Penn State and the Wolverines in The Game.
Many teams counted out Michigan football after it lost some defensive talent in the NFL draft last season, but the Wolverines have done something this year that only a few teams have been able to accomplish: Win every game. Michigan football is one of nine undefeated squads left in the FBS and looks to continue the dominance after a huge win over Penn State, 41-17.
As much as I wanted to rank Clemson over the tide, I just couldn’t. This is a great Alabama team with a Heisman hopeful QB In Bryce Young, and a great defense. People will overreact about the loss at Neyland Stadium (to the best team in the country), and think this team is not legit. Alabama is still very much in control of its own destiny, and sits in a great spot to reach another CFP.
Even after a big win for Clemson, they have been jumped by Tennessee and Michigan football. Clemson sits at 7-0, one of nine undefeated teams remaining. The Tigers still sit in a great spot, with a likely chance of going 13-0 and reaching the playoffs yet again.
One of the hottest teams in the country, the UCLA Bruins, enter with a resume of an undefeated 6-0 record, and 2 ranked wins over #15 Washington, and #11 Utah (who just upset USC). The Bruins also have a Heisman hopeful of their own in Dorian Thompson-Robinson who is looking to lead only the second PAC-12 squad ever to the CFP.
TCU is now my favorite to win the Big12 after a huge win against #8 OK State in double overtime last week. The Horned Frogs are led by senior QB and dark-horse Heisman candidate Max Duggan. It will be hard for the committee to keep an undefeated Big12 champ TCU out of the playoff should they keep winning.
I have not gotten to watch a ton of Ole Miss football but to be 7-0 in the SEC means you’re doing something right. Ole Miss’ best win is over #7 Kentucky, and a quality win over Auburn. In 3 weeks Ole Miss will host Alabama, a game that will likely decide who represents the SEC west.
I was extremely high on OK State going into their matchup against TCU, and although they fell short, they still stay inside my top 10 for week 8. I fully expect them to compete for a Big12 championship and fight for a playoff spot.
