Reacting to Michigan Basketball’s No. 22 AP poll preseason ranking
Michigan basketball entered at No. 22 overall in the AP preseason college basketball and here are some thoughts as the Wolverines open their season soon.
Believe it or not, the Michigan basketball season is just a few weeks away, and on Monday, the AP preseason poll was released and the Wolverines checked in at No. 22.
The Big Ten has a number of teams ranked as expected. Michigan basketball was picked third in the media poll and was among three Big Ten teams ranked in the AP college basketball poll.
North Carolina is the No. 1 overall team followed by Gonzaga, Houston, and Kentucky, as well as Duke and Baylor being tied for fifth.
Michigan basketball comes in at No. 22 overall and the Wolverines actually ranked second in the poll among Big Ten teams. Indiana is the No. 13 team and Illinois is 23rd.
Michigan basketball has big expectations in 2022
Last week, we heard from Juwan Howard, Hunter Dickinson, and some other Wolverines at Big Ten Media Days. One of the takeaways, outside of the fact that Dug McDaniel is going to play early, is that this team has some good mojo heading into the 2022-23 campaign.
Juwan Howard reiterated on Friday in Michigan basketball’s own media session that the goal every season is to win championships — as in the Big Ten regular-season title, the Big Ten tournament title, and the NCAA title.
That’s why Hunter Dickinson came back and this team has the talent to do it. The Wolverines have a few new pieces but Dickinson is a great centerpiece.
Jett Howard is going to be a stud as a freshman and I think he’s going to have a smoother transition than say Caleb Houstan. Jaelin Llewellyn is an underrated addition and guys like Terrance Williams are going to surprise people.
I’m not offering up any bold predictions yet. But winning the Big Ten and reaching the Sweet 16 seem like reasonable goals. Anything beyond that, and you have to see how it goes in March but get ready for Michigan basketball because it’s going to be another fun season for the Wolverines.
