Michigan Football: 6 things we learned from Wolverines rout of Penn State
The best RB tandem in college football
There are a lot of really good running back combinations out there in college football, but none is better or equal to what Michigan football has in Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards.
Corum’s first touchdown run was from two yards out but it was incredible. Any normal back would have fallen to the ground, which is why the Penn State defender was probably so adamant that Corum’s legs hit the ground. 99.9 percent of running backs wouldn’t have the leg strength to drive through that.
But Blake Corum is special and even though he’s 5-foot-9, he can beat with you speed or power. The fact that we were worried about short-yardage runs without Hassan Haskins was stupid. We should have known Corum was up to the task.
This was his fourth straight game with over 120 yards and while we aren’t shocked (we predicted it), it was still surprising how dominant Michigan was.
But when you have a five-star like Donovan Edwards as your No. 2 back, it’s to be expected. The sophomore had his true breakout performance and it was one you knew was coming.
Edwards got slowed by an injury and you could see a little rust last week. In the first half, he needed to show more patience on a couple of runs but that 67-yarder was a thing of beauty. He made that cut, and instantly you knew no one was going to catch him.
Donovan Edwards is one dude I don’t see ever getting caught from behind. I was even more impressed with his second touchdown in the fourth quarter. Blake went to the sideline for a moment and Donovan ground out the touchdown.
You need to be able to score from 60 or three yards out and I loved seeing Edwards show better vision later in the game. Donovan also had a key 21-yard reception in the second half, which fulfilled another prediction I had on Friday.
As they said after the game, they are “Lightning and Lightning” and for my money, Corum and Edwards are the best running back duo in America.
