3. J.J. McCarthy’s talents are being wasted

His stats are subdued, but this is an overreaction. McCarthy had to do very little besides hand the ball off to his two game-changing running backs in the win. He threw a costly interception that bounced off of two Penn State defenders and found its way into the arms of Curtis Jacobs. That’s a result of forcing it into coverage when he should have thrown it away and punted for the only time in the victory.

We have to recognize that this is the realization of Michigan’s offense. It is not quarterback-friendly. It relies on the offensive line and its running backs. Maybe that’s why recruits like C.J. Carr and Dante Moore chose not to commit to Michigan. Now is not the time to discuss that though as Michigan has its man in McCarthy and is in the thick of things with Jadyn Davis for 2024.

McCarthy did run for a season-high of 57 yards. It’s also very critical that he doesn’t get injured with McNamara out. They could be saving him for a shootout in Columbus come November when they go toe-to-toe with C.J. Stroud and Ohio State’s revved-up offense.
