Can Michigan prevent Penn State’s potential trick plays?

Last but not least, we have to talk about the potential for trick plays in this game. I wouldn’t normally talk about trick plays in this game, but Penn State did try two last year, and one actually worked.

There was the fake punt (after Harbaugh called a timeout, but Michigan still allowed the fake punt conversion) and there was the fake field goal from the 20-yard line, which Michigan absolutely blew up and recovered the fumble from the kicker.

While I don’t expect any trick plays this year, I also wouldn’t be totally surprised if Penn State tried to repeat their antics from last year in this game.

Michigan needs to be on high alert for Penn State’s (James Franklin’s) antics, as James Franklin does have a tendency to try out a trick play or two in huge matchups.

A trick play conversion or non-conversion could literally swing momentum one way or another and be the difference in the game, you never know, so hopefully Michigan looked back at those two trick plays on film from last year, and are preparing Michigan for those scenarios.

Overall, I think Michigan will win. It will be a tight contest like last year, but with Michigan being at home, and the Maize Out, I think Michigan has just enough to win this game. The Wolverines will need to get pressure on Sean Clifford though, and Penn State’s offensive line has only allowed seven sacks this year, which is something to watch out for.

Penn State does not have Jahan Dotson anymore, although they do have a really good tight end (just like Michigan) in Brenton Strange, who is probably Clifford’s favorite target.

If Michigan can take him out of the equation, I think that bodes well for them (they need to, because Iowa’s tight ends feasted on Michigan’s linebackers which was concerning).

I also wonder if Penn State will try to go hurry up on Michigan, to get their secondary out of position, just like what Indiana did last week. That’s also something to watch out for.

Lastly, Michigan needs to turn their field goals into touchdowns. They can’t afford to trot Jake Moody out all game and expect to win. The playcalling needs to be its absolute best in the red zone (no time for conservative stuff) and Michigan needs to cash in whenever they get down there.

This will be a really good game. I’m nervous just thinking about it. Go Blue!
