Defense: A

Michigan football gave up more plays than I would have liked in the first half and I’m sure the coaching staff felt the same way. However, the Wolverines held twice on scoring opportunities for Indiana and Mike Morris blocked a field goal which saved three points.

In the second half, Indiana never mounted a serious attempt at scoring. The Wolverines dominated defensively against both the run and the pass.

I thought it was one of Mazi Smith’s best games. He had four solo tackles and blew up a number of runs by himself. Kris Jenkins also had one of his best performances of the season too with five tackles, a tackle for loss and two quarterback hurries.

The edge rushers shined though. Morris continues to dominate (5 sacks in 2022) and Eyabi Okie keeps having a David Ojabo type rise. He notched another sack and patted down two passes and had 1.5 tackles for loss.

It was also fun to see Jaylen Harrell, Derrick Moore, and Braiden McGregor get home. If people are worried about the pass rush, I’m not sure why. Michigan leads the Big Ten in sacks and is one of the most productive pass rush units in the country.

You also get the feeling the Wolverines are only going to get better, although Penn State will be a huge test, not just for the defense but for DC Jesse Minter. So far, his adjustments have been really good but we’ll see how he does in a top-10 showdown.
