5 things we learned in Michigan Football win over Indiana
The offense can still hit another gear
It’s been curious to me that Michigan football hasn’t found a way to get Andrel Anthony more involved in the offense.
I know Michigan has a lot of talented players to get the ball too. Ronnie Bell caught 11 passes for 121 yards on Saturday. Cornelius Johnson caught two touchdowns and Schoonmaker is boosting his NFL draft stock on a weekly basis at tight end.
But Anthony offered a spark in the second half. He caught two passes for 32 yards and both were key first downs that came in Michigan’s own territory. He’s got a knack for finding space in the zone and needs more opportunities.
I was disappointed he didn’t get a jump-ball type ball down the field. I’d like to see at least one or two deep shots per game to him and Roman when he gets healthy. I’d also love to see more of an effort to get A.J. Henning the ball.
Harbaugh talked about using Henning more out of the backfield, so do it and not just on end-arounds. Throw the ball to him. Use him like they used to use Chris Evans.
It’s tough, Donovan Edwards needs more touches too and the top three wideouts — Bell, Johnson, and Wilson have all earned their place in the pecking order. But the offensive coaches need to do a better job of getting the ball to Anthony, A.J. Henning, and Edwards, it’s as simple as that.
The offense is playing winning football, but it hasn’t reached its ceiling. Not even close. And getting Anthony, Henning, and Edwards more involved will help it do exactly that.
