Michigan football: 3 takeaways from an isolating win at Indiana
By Nick Popio
3. J.J. McCarthy excelled with his foremost performance
McCarthy started out a perfect seven for seven until he threw an incomplete pass. He finished the contest with three touchdowns and his first 300-yard passing game in his young career. Indiana came into the matchup with one of the nation’s worst pass defenses and McCarthy made that statement come true in his standout showing.
Ronnie Bell went over 100 yards on 11 receptions. It’s his initial 100-yard outing since November of 2020 when Michigan football lost to Indiana in Bloomington. He now has a team-high of 30 grabs on the year and is hitting his stride, like so many expected him to do since he came back from his injury that cost him from contributing to a Big Ten championship offense.
Luke Schoonmaker caught nine and is filling in very nicely for the injured Erick All. He’s become McCarthy’s safe outlet when he needs him. He and Cornelius Johnson were on the receiving end of McCarthy’s three touchdown passes on the day.
McCarthy’s completion percentage continues to remain high with it nearing the 80% mark against a lousy Indiana pass defense.
