Michigan football struggled for a half against Indiana but pulled away in the second half and here are our gut reactions to the Wolverines’ sixth win.

The Michigan Wolverines ran into a stiffer test than expected on Saturday in Bloomington against the Indiana Hoosiers. But knowing the history between these two teams, it probably shouldn’t be all that surprising.

In the end, Michigan football won by three touchdowns (31-10) in a game that it never trailed in. There were some worrisome moments, especially before the first half ended. But the blocked kick by Mike Morris helped turned the tide and the pass rush took over.

With the score tied 10-10 at the half, defensive coordinator Jesse Minter once again showed the ability to adjust and the Wolverines shut out Indiana in the second half.

J.J. McCarthy tossed three touchdowns and also converted some huge third downs. The defense put an exclamation point on the win as did Blake Corum.

Obviously, the fact that Mike Hart had to be taken to the hospital is on the mind of every Michigan football fan. We pray he is OK.

Here are our gut reactions to the win and Michigan football starting 6-0.

Michigan football vs Indiana: Gut reactions

  • J.J. McCarthy had to play like a veteran and in the second half, he did. Not only did he throw for 300 yards for the first time he engineered a 98-yard drive that turned the tide.
  • There are still some questions about McCarthy and he needs to be more accurate on his deep shots but he proved he can win a close game with his arm.
  • The defense is spectacular. No doubt the pass rush was a huge factor.
  • Seven sacks and 10 tackles for loss describe the domination.
  • This was one of Mazi Smith’s best games. Indiana ran 25 times for 19 yards and Smith was a big reason why.
  • The cornerback play could be better but Indiana threw 45 times for 203 yards.
  • The coaching staff needs to unleash J.J. McCarthy.
  • The second half was better but those runs on third and fourth down were just bad coaching.
  • Michigan football might have the best special teams unit in the country.
  • Blake Corum kept his Heisman hopes intact. Another ho-hum 100-yard day.
  • This turned into a trap game but Michigan survived.
  • On to Penn State.
  • Go Blue!
